Red Chicken Pysanky Skrobanki Drapanki Dryapanky Scratch Technique Floral Pattern Polish Ukrainian Egg

This style of Easter egg in Ukraine is called dryapanka, and in Poland it is called skrobanki or drapanka. It is a chicken egg and was created by scratching the egg with a sharp instrument. This is the same technique that was used to create Easter eggs over 2,000 years ago. To create the egg, I first empty out the contents of the egg. The egg is then dyed a solid color, and I scratch or etch the design into the egg using a sharp instrument. The egg is then coated with varnish to protect it.
