2016 Bowls

What a wonderful Democrat & Chronicle article on Hungerford neighbor Sabra Wood’s annual event!

Cat Clay studio is hosting Winter Warmth, a Soup(er) Benefit Friday, Jan. 8.

Donating money to good causes is nice, says Cat Clay owner/artist Sabra Wood. “But it’s not very rewarding, so I love getting personally involved.”

That’s why she started Sample Soap, a nonprofit that collects personal care items and distributes them to the neediest groups in Rochester.

It’s also why she launched Winter Warmth, a Soup(er) Benefit. The event is held every January in Wood’s Hungerford Building studio, and 100 percent of the proceeds go to Healthy Sisters Soup & Bean Works, a nonprofit that helps women in recovery.

“Let’s face it, January is a dead month,” she says. “This is a wonderful way to pause, take stock and kick of the New Year.”

For $20, guests get ceramic bowls handcrafted and donated by local artists — including Wood, Richard Aerni, Carolyn Dilcher-Stutz (whose work is pictured) and Juliana Drumheller, among others — packages of soup mix from Healthy Sisters, and appetizers and desserts to graze on.

Winter Warmth runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, in Suite 242 of the Hungerford Building, 1115 E. Main St. (door 2 by the loading docks). Parking is available at the Hungerford, but don’t park in front of Happy Feet, which is a tow-away zone. Parking also is available at Visions Credit Union across Main Street and at Greenovation.

Last year, 120 bowls were sold at the event, and at least that many will be available this year, Wood says.
