Get to Know . . . Lisa Johnson

Lisa-Johnson
What is your name and what is your business name?
My name is Lisa Johnson and my business is Beachcomber Designs.

How long have you been an artist and how did you get started?
I’ve enjoyed making things for as long as I can remember. I loved craft when I was young. I remember doing those string art things (you know the ones, Stefani!) and getting so much satisfaction from it. When I started Beachcomber, I was selling children’s sweater kits. I resurrected it about 15 years ago with making handmade jewelry.

Explain a little bit about your process.
I work with bead weaving and in silver. The two different processes work well for me because I don’t always feel like doing one or the other, and I can switch it up according to how I feel. I really enjoy working in both ways.

Wallflower Link Bracelet

Metal clay is great because it’s so versatile and you can get great results. I sometimes combine it with found objects, like beach glass and pebbles.

Star-Flower-Bracelet

Bead weaving is also very versatile; and it has such a long, rich history. It takes a lot of patience and is very meditative.

Beachglass-Bracelet

What’s the comment heard most often about your art?
People are often surprised that my glass comes from Lake Ontario. Also, many people have a beach glass story of their own. It’s a great conversation starter!

Forget Me Not Necklace

What is one thing people find surprising in how your art is created?
Sometimes they haven’t heard of metal clay, or don’t really understand how it works. It’s surprising how much detail you can get with this technique.

What’s the one tool you couldn’t live without, in creating your art?
My Dremel. It changed my life.

How has your art changed over time?
My first pieces were done in macramé and antique beads and buttons. There are so many cool techniques for making jewelry; I’d like to try them all. But, the techniques I’m currently using will keep me challenged for a long time.

What’s your favorite part of making your pieces?
My favorite part is seeing a new design finished for the first time. It’s always a surprise.

Least favorite?
Making earring tops – Although, I don’t really hate it.

What’s your dream project?
I don’t have one at this point. I do have some new directions I’d like to pursue. We’ll see . . .

Where is your art available for purchase?

You can purchase directly from my Beachcomber Designs website and you can shop locally at these fine stores and galleries. I post some of my newest one-of-a-kind pieces on my Beachcomber Designs Facebook page too.

Buying Local Art Thursday – Sunday, Dec 5 – 8

Square Logo Proud Member

I remember where I was the first time a customer asked me, “Are you local? I’m only buying locally made gifts this year.” This was in 2009, well before these words entered our vocabulary: Buy Local, Eat Local, locavores, Shop Small, Small Business Saturday. That woman opened my mind and I’ve been trying to live that way ever since. I’m not perfect but I try. And I know a lot of you do too.

Our community of artists, Rochester Artisans, has grown from 7 members in 2009, to 692 as of today. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for liking and buying what is our passion to make.

Here’s where you can find some of our members in the days to come of next weekend. There are 17 events listed here so I’m declaring this the High Weekend of Holiday Shopping Local!

Have fun and we thank you!

Honestly, I could not be more proud to be included in Kevin & Mary Schoonover’s Artist Open House at their Flying Whale Studios in Geneva. I knew from the list of participating artists it was going to be a great event, but seeing the art in person when I dropped my hand stitched paper art off yesterday – blew my mind!

The Rochester Artisans participating in the Open House are listed below. You can see the full list of 26 artists here.

Geneva, NY is a beautiful town on Seneca Lake – the perfect destination for a drive with your Thanksgiving guests. It’s less than an hour from Rochester. And thank you for shopping local and supporting local artists!
