Buying Local Art Thursday – Sunday, Dec 5 – 8

Square Logo Proud Member

I remember where I was the first time a customer asked me, “Are you local? I’m only buying locally made gifts this year.” This was in 2009, well before these words entered our vocabulary: Buy Local, Eat Local, locavores, Shop Small, Small Business Saturday. That woman opened my mind and I’ve been trying to live that way ever since. I’m not perfect but I try. And I know a lot of you do too.

Our community of artists, Rochester Artisans, has grown from 7 members in 2009, to 692 as of today. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for liking and buying what is our passion to make.

Here’s where you can find some of our members in the days to come of next weekend. There are 17 events listed here so I’m declaring this the High Weekend of Holiday Shopping Local!

Have fun and we thank you!

You can get a glimpse of the artwork that will be for sale, on the Maplewood Y Craft Show’s website.

I’m very involved in helping Sara Senour organize this show so I wanted to share some background information. This is the 3rd annual for this show – and this time it’s juried! That means the scores of 3 outside jurors were used to determine the finest selection of artisans you will see at the show. The jurors assigned a value of 1-5, using 5 different criteria.

We were also very grateful to be able to use the services offered by the public relations person that works for the local corporate office of the YMCA. With the help of their graphic designers, we’re very happy with our “branded” look that will follow the show for years to come.

On a personal note, I’m happy to report that the Rochester Artisans listed above account for 60% of the total artists in the show. I love numbers and I know you love Fun Facts.

Noteworthy things to mention for customers, also new this year:
Passport Program. Each visitor will receive a program upon entering the show. The centerfold is printed with a layout of the artisan spaces, including booth number. Customers are encouraged to have each artist they visit, initial their little space on the map. Customers who obtain 30 initials, out of 42 artists, are then eligible for the drawing of 3 fabulous prizes. (Prizes are gift certificates to Target, Peoples Pottery and Craft Co No. 6.)

The Irondequoit Art Club will be hosting their show (with demonstrations) in the Lily Cafe, just steps from the gym where the craft show is. The FCTT HiRailers will be demonstrating model railroading. And there is complimentary child care is available.

Lastly, there will also be 2 food sales going on at the Maplewood Y that day as well. One is an International Food Sale with sampling of cuisines from around the world. The second is a Bake Sale with all sorts of sweet treats for sale.

I can't resist pointing out that all 5 photos on this postcard show the work of Rochester Artisans, (a decision made unknowingly by the YMCA public relations team). ~ Stefani ~

Get to Know . . . Diane Fleckenstein

2467855
What is your name and what is your business name?
My name is Diane Fleckenstein, the name of my business is Crafters Haven and my website is Create with Felt.

How long have you been an artist and how did you get started?
I have been crafting since I was a teen. I use to make my own clothes, but over the years I have widened my crafting experience. I always like to learn something new. There isn’t anything I haven’t tried. I love making things for family and friends for gifts.

Explain a little bit about your process.
Today my creativity has brought me to another level – needle felting with wool, yarns and all kinds of fiber, either by knitting with wool then felting it, or creating my own fabric with wool rovings and wet felting it into a one of a kind piece of art.

I also love to upcycle wool sweaters into a one-of-a-kind bag or pillow.

bluebagwotjbeadedflap

What’s the comment heard most often about your art?
How talented and creative I am.

blueswirlfeltedbag

What is one thing people find surprising in how your art is created?
Some people do not even know what needle felting is. I explain to them the process of using wool rovings, yarns and fibers to create my art with barb needles or a felting machine.

What’s the one tool you couldn’t live without, in creating your art?
Wool, yarns, barb needles and a felting machine.

How has your art changed over time?
I don’t think it has changed, but there is a lot of information out there on how to create fantastic art with needle felting.

bluegraybag

What’s your favorite part of making your pieces? Least favorite?
I think my favorite part is laying out my wool rovings and adding yarns and embellishments to my creations. It just brings it to a whole other level.

My least favorite is trying to decide what to make next, too many ideas in my head.

What’s your dream project?
Creating a picture art with wool with embellishments, beads and hand embroidery.

Where is your art available for purchase?
My pieces are available on my web site: Create with Felt and on Etsy at DeesTees.

I also will be doing some local shows in 2013.

George Eastman House Festival of Trees

The George Eastman House is one of Rochester most treasured landmarks.

George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film combines the world’s leading collections of photography and motion pictures with the National Historic Landmark mansion and gardens of Kodak founder George Eastman. Eastman is heralded as the father of popular photography and motion picture film.

In this age of digital photography, from cell phone cameras to on-demand television and movies in high definition, I am 100% guilty of taking those things for granted.

Thank you Mr. Eastman!

Rochester Artisans is proud to announce our participation in the Eastman House fundraising event, Festival of Trees. This very cool project was brought to my attention by Rochester Artisan Barbara Tuttle, of Glimmer Jewels, who is a docent at the Eastman House.

The Festival of Trees is just one of the annual holiday events held at the Eastman House. The Holiday Wreath Display and Auction will have over 30 wreaths donated by garden clubs and florists available for viewing and bidding.

The Sweet Creations Gingerbread House Display is a perennial favorite that always makes the local news!

The Festival of Trees will feature dozens of decorated trees donated by area groups and businesses.

I feel a Rochester Artisans field trip coming on in December to partake in this visual festivity!
