George Eastman House Festival of Trees

The George Eastman House is one of Rochester most treasured landmarks.

George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film combines the world’s leading collections of photography and motion pictures with the National Historic Landmark mansion and gardens of Kodak founder George Eastman. Eastman is heralded as the father of popular photography and motion picture film.

In this age of digital photography, from cell phone cameras to on-demand television and movies in high definition, I am 100% guilty of taking those things for granted.

Thank you Mr. Eastman!

Rochester Artisans is proud to announce our participation in the Eastman House fundraising event, Festival of Trees. This very cool project was brought to my attention by Rochester Artisan Barbara Tuttle, of Glimmer Jewels, who is a docent at the Eastman House.

The Festival of Trees is just one of the annual holiday events held at the Eastman House. The Holiday Wreath Display and Auction will have over 30 wreaths donated by garden clubs and florists available for viewing and bidding.

The Sweet Creations Gingerbread House Display is a perennial favorite that always makes the local news!

The Festival of Trees will feature dozens of decorated trees donated by area groups and businesses.

I feel a Rochester Artisans field trip coming on in December to partake in this visual festivity!

Art & Whimsy Presents Cherie Carter & Anne Bliss

May 14
Monday, 5:00-9:00
Art & Whimsy

Memorial Art Gallery
500 University Avenue
Rochester, NY

Monday night brings us the 3rd annual Art & Whimsy event, which is billed as “A Ladies Night Out” which raises funds for the Empire State Lyric Theater with a portion of the proceeds going to Angels of Mercy.

I was accepted to participate in the very first one two years ago. Honestly, I didn’t make a lot of sales, but it was one of the most interesting events I’ve attended. You can read my review and see photos of the 2010 event here.

I can honestly say the best thing to come out of that for me was meeting Liz Yockel, of  The Fuzzy Bunny. We both felt like fish out of water there, among the wealthy patrons in this big, fancy house. Her boyfriend Travis is just as fun and funny as she is so I’m happy to call them both my friends now as we’ve gotten to know each other more, through other shows in the last couple of years.

As I use the word wealthy, I feel the need to tell you the admission is $35 at the door. Don’t want you to show up and have sticker shock induced heart failure. According to the program above, it looks like the event has really grown in the last couple of years, now including a fashion show – so much so, it’s being held at the Memorial Art Gallery this year. You will get your money’s worth and it’s for a good cause, remember!

Cherie Carter Custom Designed Handbags – – and so much more!

But let’s talk about Rochester Artisan Cherie Carter who will be at Art & Whimsy, selling her finely sewn bags, purses, pillows, wine bottle bags and more. I’ve met her a couple of times and seen her work in person – it’s gor-geous! (Some of you Rochester Artisans will remember her from our April Spring Wing Ding!)

Any time I get a chance to feature Cherie’s work I include this Tree of Life pillow – just love it!

Cherie learned to sew from her mom and says, “The sewing has served me well all my life – from doll clothes, to sewing for my daughters, to creating original designs for my purses and other creations.

Dogwood Purse

I particularly enjoyed, picking fabrics and colors for my designs. Early on, I had a knack for combining patterns, colors and textures of different fabrics. It’s always fun, because sometimes I have no idea where things will lead me. And now, I suppose it’s OK to ‘have no idea’ about something!

Wine Bottle Bag

Today, my handbags are made in limited quantities so that the one you purchase will be unique, and virtually one of a kind. Also, our handbags are carefully hand crafted in the USA, when you purchase a Cherie Carter handbag, you not only help keep people in this country working, your money stays in this country, doing good things for our economy.

I love the colors of the ferns adorning this bag!

Love the texture of this bag!

Whether or not you opt for a Ladies Night Out Monday night, you can visit Cherie’s website and Facebook page and see her other fine work.

But wait, there’s more!

The lovely and talented Anne Bliss, of Bliss Designs will also be at Art & Whimsy!

Honestly, I knew nothing about pearls until Anne showed me a thing or two! Look at this amazing color!

This is one of her newer pieces!

Anne also offers the classics.

I love that Anne is so involved in her community in Buffalo – combining her love of art with good work.

“I have served on the board of Artists in Buffalo Inc since 2008, am a partner with Urban Artisans since 2008, and with Bliss & Bejewelled Benefit Bazaars since 2004. We’ve raised more than $50,000 for local charities, such as Gilda’s Club WNY, Child & Family Services Haven House, Hospice Buffalo and more.”

Now you have two most excellent reasons to attend Art & Whimsy tonight!
