Award winning artist Mia Sohn is back at the Central Library’s annual Artist at Work! series. Mia is a friend and a hoot & a half. Stop by to watch her work and feel free to ask questions, like the story behind the names of her eggs, which are almost always song titles.

Meet artist Peggy Martinez and watch as she creates a beautiful painting right in the Arts Division. Peggy Martinez‘s vibrant paintings have won awards and have been featured in “American Art Collector” magazine. She participated in the 2014 series “Inspiration” by creating a painting during an RPO performance. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle chose her as a “Woman to Watch,” both for her artistic talents and the work she has done in the community, especially to raise awareness of pediatric asthma. Her exhibit “Gift of the Rose” was featured in the 2014 PBS series “Cycle of Health” and honors the memory of her sister who suffered from asthma. Stop by, ask questions, observe art being created, and be inspired! During September, there will be a display of Ms. Martinez’s paintings in the Reidman display cases in the Arts Division. This program has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Friends and Foundation of the Rochester Public Library.

Kites, Tomatoes and Colors

The Clothesline Festival gets an enormous amount of publicity, as it should. It’s the largest, longest-running fine art and crafts festival in Rochester. To me it is the mac-daddy of all Rochester shows. As I never fail to point out to anyone who will listen, and even Clothesline Logo 2013those who won’t, I was accepted to the Clothesline a few years ago. But then I decided to no longer do outdoor shows so I withdrew from the show and got most of my money back, as I recall. I almost didn’t care if I got my money back, considering it fair payment for bragging rights. But I hereby declare that the statute of limitations has expired and I’ll not speak of it again.

There are 25 Rochester Artisans participating in The Clothesline. My boss at Fairport Pharmacy asked me the other day if I was going to the festival and I said, “No, I really can’t. I end up talking to way too many people and it shoots my whole day!” I think she thought that was a little weird – she considers it the best show around, how could I pass it up? I once went to a much smaller show that unfortunately had very little traffic (so artists were not occupied with customers) and I ended up spending 6 hours there. That shocked even me! It was fun, but wow – 6 hours??

So it’s past situations like that, plus all the time I spend at shows I’m in, I really have little interest in going to craft shows and festivals. It’s like a busman’s holiday for me. I’m sure that is surprising to some people. Another possibly surprising fun fact: I really tire of “recruiting” new members for Rochester Artisans. It’s probably the repetition I’m bored of. I used to go to shows and approach many artists in their booths and explain the benefits of Rochester Artisan free membership. Now, believe me, if the subject comes up in my daily life, I will talk your ear off with great enthusiasm. But overall, especially at shows, I prefer to have my minions spread the word. (I say minions, just to see if any of them actually read what I write here!)

Enough of me. Let’s talk about this weekend’s shows that are not The Clothesline Festival, shall we?

Pysanky by Mia2012 Best of Show Award, Central NY Maple Festival; Award Winner, Remsen Barn Festival of the Arts and 2012 Award of Distinction, 3-D Mixed Media, Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival

Mia (pronounced My-a) Sohn is an accomplished pysanky artist, as the recent awards listed above can attest to. “The Egg Lady” as she refers to herself, has been creating these delicate works of art for over 30 years. Pysanka is a Ukrainian word meaning ‘to write.’ (The plural is ‘pysanky.’)

Mia Sohn at Work

I do all of the work free-hand, no decals, stencils or paint.

I draw on egg shells with hot beeswax, which comes out of a miniature brass funnel. After I draw everything that I want to keep white, I dye the egg and then draw with wax on that color. I work from color to color, often light to dark, although I now use acid washing to change my color palette and to add texture and extra details to my designs. When I finish the design, I have a dark, wax-covered egg. I heat the egg and melt the wax off using a heat gun- and the colors are revealed.

I can tell Mia and I are around the same age because she titles her finished pieces with musical references that I can relate to! Color My World, Dancing in the Dark, In-a-Gadda-da-Vida, Ruby Tuesday. (Oops, I stand corrected. I just read that Mia’s sister likes to name Mia’s eggs. So I guess I’m around the same age as Mia’s sister!
