I have a great fondness for the Keuka Lake area. After my dad retired at age 55, he owned a 125 acre tree farm for a bunch of years. I loved the drive down there and never missed a chance to hit up The Windmill Farm & Craft Market and Oak Hill Bulk Foods.
Poor Penn Yan has been through a lot lately with the recent flooding. I can hardly bear to look at the photos. There’s a bar/restaurant we used to have lunch at sometimes. I remember my sister and I taking our visiting cousin there once. Actually my most vivid memory of that trip is Scott making me laugh so hard, I squirted milk out my nose. (Sorry for the visual.) It was not in the restaurant, thank goodness, but in the car. My mom’s car. I remember turning on the windshield wipers, pretending they were on the inside, erasing all evidence, making us laugh harder.
Um, where was I? Oh! The many Rochester Artisans you’ll get to visit with at this year’s Keuka Arts Festival. Here they are!
I was lucky enough to be in Linda’s studio recently and she showed me some Keuka Lake pieces she was working on, specifically for this show. I’m not finding any photos of them
so I’m sharing this custom dog panel because I love it.

Today we have a guest post by Michelle Gottstein, from the Eastside Family YMCA:
This year, the Eastside YMCA in Penfield will put on their annual Crafts for a Cause show to benefit the Invest in Youth Campaign on Saturday December 1, 2012, 9:00-3:00. In its 3rd year, the show will feature 70+ craft vendors along with door prizes, a large bake sale and concession area, and even pictures with Santa for the kids!
The vendor fees from this event benefits the Y’s annual fundraising campaign which helps families in the community to afford programming such as camp, preschool, and swim lessons. The funds raised are donated directly back to families in the Penfield community who need it most.
The Crafts for a Cause event will highlight over 70 local vendors this year. Items will include photography, kids’ items, jewelry, floral, knit items, garden items, doll clothes, and much more! This event is open to the community! So spend a nice Saturday supporting the community and local artists at this exciting and unique event suitable for the whole family!

The lovely Sharon Kahler is the producer of this show, which was held 3 times/year (May, October and November) during the years when I first started doing craft shows. It was always held on a Thursday and ran until 7:00 pm in order to catch the heading-home-from-work crowd. I developed a loyal following of steady customers from this show and made friends with some very talented artists. (Hi Vickie, Rachel and Liz!)
Sharon has always done a good job of keeping her shows reasonably priced for the artists so when the rent at the winery became higher than she was comfortable with, she moved the show to her church.
This year – it’s back at Casa Larga! I find myself unexpectedly very excited about “returning to my roots”. Sharon treats her artists well – provides coffee and sweet rolls and breads for breakfast, makes lunch ordering available, allows plenty of time for set-up before the show and her artists represent a good variety of high quality work. It’s become a bit of a tradition for my mom to show up at the show and ask me what I want for Christmas. We give donations for gifts now, with a small gift to open, usually handmade by someone – my family excels at gift giving, if I say so myself. 🙂 Hopefully I’ll be able to point her in the direction of some lovingly hand-crafted item that I know I’ll treasure.
Stop by Casa Larga Winery this Thursday, 10:00-7:00 and see the work of the artists listed above and many more. If you are interested in applying to the show sometime, I’ll be more than happy to introduce you to Sharon.
