Buying Local Art Thursday – Sunday, Dec 5 – 8

Square Logo Proud Member

I remember where I was the first time a customer asked me, “Are you local? I’m only buying locally made gifts this year.” This was in 2009, well before these words entered our vocabulary: Buy Local, Eat Local, locavores, Shop Small, Small Business Saturday. That woman opened my mind and I’ve been trying to live that way ever since. I’m not perfect but I try. And I know a lot of you do too.

Our community of artists, Rochester Artisans, has grown from 7 members in 2009, to 692 as of today. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for liking and buying what is our passion to make.

Here’s where you can find some of our members in the days to come of next weekend. There are 17 events listed here so I’m declaring this the High Weekend of Holiday Shopping Local!

Have fun and we thank you!

North Winton Village Festival of the Arts

NWVFestivalLogo2013-286x300

I very often include a mention of the Fun Factor when writing reviews of the shows I’m in, for our Rochester Artisans email list. I suspect this North Winton Village Festival of the Arts has a high fun factor because who doesn’t love supporting their hometown? You get the benefits of a big city, with the closeness of a small hometown.

I hope you get a chance to go to the Festival of the Arts. Visit with and support the artists, enjoy the flowers, grab a bite to eat – sounds like a high Fun Factor to me!

Kites, Tomatoes and Colors

The Clothesline Festival gets an enormous amount of publicity, as it should. It’s the largest, longest-running fine art and crafts festival in Rochester. To me it is the mac-daddy of all Rochester shows. As I never fail to point out to anyone who will listen, and even Clothesline Logo 2013those who won’t, I was accepted to the Clothesline a few years ago. But then I decided to no longer do outdoor shows so I withdrew from the show and got most of my money back, as I recall. I almost didn’t care if I got my money back, considering it fair payment for bragging rights. But I hereby declare that the statute of limitations has expired and I’ll not speak of it again.

There are 25 Rochester Artisans participating in The Clothesline. My boss at Fairport Pharmacy asked me the other day if I was going to the festival and I said, “No, I really can’t. I end up talking to way too many people and it shoots my whole day!” I think she thought that was a little weird – she considers it the best show around, how could I pass it up? I once went to a much smaller show that unfortunately had very little traffic (so artists were not occupied with customers) and I ended up spending 6 hours there. That shocked even me! It was fun, but wow – 6 hours??

So it’s past situations like that, plus all the time I spend at shows I’m in, I really have little interest in going to craft shows and festivals. It’s like a busman’s holiday for me. I’m sure that is surprising to some people. Another possibly surprising fun fact: I really tire of “recruiting” new members for Rochester Artisans. It’s probably the repetition I’m bored of. I used to go to shows and approach many artists in their booths and explain the benefits of Rochester Artisan free membership. Now, believe me, if the subject comes up in my daily life, I will talk your ear off with great enthusiasm. But overall, especially at shows, I prefer to have my minions spread the word. (I say minions, just to see if any of them actually read what I write here!)

Enough of me. Let’s talk about this weekend’s shows that are not The Clothesline Festival, shall we?

Get to Know . . . Pam Perkins

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What is your name and what is your business name?
My name is Pam Perkins and my company’s name is Small Town Girl. You can find me on Pinterest, my website and my Etsy shop

How long have you been an artist and how did you get started?
I have been making jewelry for 4 years. What got me started was I bought a beautiful necklace that didn’t have matching earrings so I made a pair myself. They were a great match, and that gave me the initiative to create earrings. And now I have added stick pins and pins of my own design.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Explain a little bit about your process.
I love to use different colored wire that compliments the color of the stones. I find that many people like the wire “swirl” design on the earrings.

What’s the comment heard most often about your art?
My customers have commented how they love the use of color wire that gives the earrings the additional pizzazz.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What is one thing people find surprising in how your art is created?
I use the wire as one whole piece called “fish hook” and its simple design works for people with dexterity issues.

What’s the one tool you couldn’t live without, in creating your art? The Wigjig, so I can make the “swirl.”

wigjig

How has your art changed over time?
I’ve added pins especially stick pins as another option. And I’m using larger stones to make pendants.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What’s your favorite part of making your pieces? Least favorite?
My favorite part is finding stones that look fantastic together and then finding the right color wire that makes the combination complete. Least favorite is ordering stones and finding their color is not what I expected.

What’s your dream project?
To work with copper, using copper to solder, bend and hammer.

Where is your art available for purchase?
I do art shows throughout the year, in addition to Pinterest, my website and my Etsy shop.

~ ~ ~

Pam is too modest to mention her 15 minutes of fame. She has nimble fingers – it says so right here! There’s a nice photo op too. Congratulations, Pam!
